Mountain homestay

Welcome to our mountain homestay programme. Your placement will be in Goljung village located within the Langtang National Park. Goljung sits at 1,945m above sea level, high in the Himalayas, a mere 10-hour bus journey from Kathmandu. Please note there is a fee to enter the National Park of 3,000 Nepali Rupees (approximately $30US).

You will stay with Singi and his wife Jenma in the Yellow House, which has been completely rebuilt over the past few years. Singi and Jenma’s previous home was destroyed by the 2015 earthquake. The lovely Yellow House features western toilet facilities, a solar powered hot shower and private accommodation.

The Goljung villagers are Tamang people and have their own dialect rather than speaking Nepali. 90% of Tamangs are Buddhist. Most Tamangs are farmers and due to the lack of irrigation at higher altitudes, their crops are often limited to corn, millet, wheat, barley, and potatoes. They often supplement their farming income by working as mountain trekking guides and porters.

During your stay in Goljung you can learn about Tamang culture and Buddhism. You can learn about and even help with cooking and preparing traditional Tamang cuisine. There are lots of places to explore locally, including hot springs and even a daytrip to the Chinese border.

The Langtang Heritage Trail and Langtang Valley treks pass directly through Goljung village. So, if a trek is part of your plans, rather than travelling from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi to start your trek, you can start your chosen trek from the front door of the Yellow House. How convenient is that? Trekking details and costs are available on request. Example itinerary
